About Matthew Dosland

Cellist Matthew Dosland grew up in Saint Paul, Minnesota and started playing cello at the age of 8. He is currently on the faculty at St. Joseph’s School of Music teaching private cello lessons and coaching chamber music as well as being an active freelance musician who has performed with Artistry Theater, Bloomington Symphony, and Lyric Arts of Anoka.

He began taking private lessons with Teresa Richardson who he would study with for 8 years. When Matthew graduated from Saint Paul Central High School he chose to attend Luther College to pursue a degree in music. While attending Luther College he studied primarily with Dr. Philip Borter, with supplemental lessons from Drs. Cole Tutino and Ismar Gomes. Matthew performed throughout his time at Luther with the Luther College Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Daniel Baldwin, touring with the orchestra throughout the Midwest twice and Vienna as part of a month-long residency. Throughout this time Matthew was also active as a chamber musician, performing with several piano trios under the instruction of Drs. John Strauss and Nicholas Shaneyfelt. Matthew graduated from Luther College in 2019 with degrees in Music Performance and Nordic Studies.

Matthew continued his education at the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University in pursuit of a Master’s in Cello Performance under the guidance of Richard Hirschl. Matthew participated in various chamber ensembles while at Roosevelt University under the supervision of professors Liba Schacht, Igor Fedotov, Adam Neiman, and MingHuan Xu. While at Roosevelt University, Matthew promoted and worked with various composers to bring new concert works to the stage, premiering works by Austin Williams and Julian Kwoun.

Matthew has participated in several summer festivals, most notably the Northern Lights Chamber Music Institute which he attended from 2014-2018 and 2021-2022 under the direction of Young Nam Kim and Ariana Kim. In 2017 he attended the International Music Festival of the Adriatic in Duino, Italy studying with Tulio Rondón.

Contemporary music is something that Matthew loves dearly and advocates for through the podcast Relevant Tones, which he is a producer and host for. His interviews for Relevant Tones have included cellist Michael Nicolas of Brooklyn Rider, composers Caroline Shaw, Michael Hersch, Frank Horvat, and violinist David Harrington of the Kronos Quartet. Relevant Tones is a production of Access Contemporary Music that focuses on educating people about new music through interviews with musicians and reviews of albums and concerts.

Matthew currently resides in St. Paul, Minnesota where he enjoys making coffee, reading, running, and watching sports in his free time.
